JAMSHEDPUR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) suicide case has taken an ugly turn with parents of the victim, Satyendra Singh, alleging that their son took his own life after he was ragged by his seniors at the institute.
Satyendra's parents Ramashish Prasad and Bindu Devi, who arrived at the Adityapur NIT early on Wednesday morning, has accused senior students of ragging his son that eventually resulted in his committing suicide by hanging in his hostel room.
In the FIR lodged with Adityapur police station, Prasad, a vigilance inspector in Hazaribag, alleged that the senior students used to rag his son regularly since the early days of his admission to the engineering college and that gradually led to his depression and suicide.
Police, meanwhile, said it was difficult to arrive at any conclusion now as investigation was on. Nevertheless, they have not ruled out the ragging angle either.
"Everything is under the scanner. We will hold a thorough investigation and only then something can be said. However, regarding the FIR lodged by the mother of the deceased, all I can say is that no aspect will be overlooked during the probe," said Sheetal Oraon, Seraikela Kharswan SP.
Now, with the matter in the police court, the NIT authorities have refused to speak much. "We feel sad about such an incident. However, police are looking into the matter and things will come to light at the appropriate time," said an NIT official.
On Tuesday evening, Satyendra Singh, a fresher with the MCA stream of NIT, hanged himself to death. The college administration rushed Satyendra to Tata Memorial Hospital and then, informed his parents.
The NIT on Wednesday paid tribute to Satyendra and called off college for the day. His parents have decided to take the body to Hazaribag.

Jamshedpur, May 8: Even as the teachers continued with their strike, the viva voce for the third and fourth year students began today at National Institute of Technology.
The management of the premier engineering college, however, brought in teachers from BIT, Mesra, for conducting the viva voce as the teachers of the institute are on strike. The viva began from 9am today and continued till 5pm with a break of two hours inbetween.
Acting National Institute of Technology director Akhileshwar Mishra confirmed that the viva voce started today and would continue for the next four days.
He said the end-semester viva voce was being conducted under the supervision of professor-in-charge (examination) A.M. Tigga.
He added that the teachers from BIT, Mesra, would conduct interviews till Sunday.
“As the teachers are on strike and have declared to remain aloof from even the non-teaching activities in the institute, we had no other option than to bring in teachers from outside. The students are being made to appear for the viva voce in some way or the other,” said Mishra.
After holding the end semester examination on May 5 and 6, the college authorities postponed the examination for an indefinite period. Students of first year and second year were asked to go home and their hostels were vacated after two days of end-semester examination.
Mishra said he was yet to receive any communication from the human resource development ministry or the chairman of the board of governors regarding the appointment of S.K. Sarangi as the new director. Speculation is rife that S.K. Sarangi, who is at the helm of affairs National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, at present, would be given the additional charge of National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur.
The striking teachers are, however, hopeful of appointment of the new director by May 12.
M.K. Agrawal, the president of National Institute of Technology Teachers’ Association, said that the ministry of human resource development is in touch with the director of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, and the latter may be given the new assignment with the additional charge as the director of National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, anytime.
“We would continue our strike till the new director joins the institute. But we hopeful that the new director would be coming here in the next couple of days,” said Agrawal.

Jamshedpur, Feb. 1: National Institute of Technology students called off the fast-unto-death strike this afternoon following intervention of the local administration.
Seraikela sub-divisional officer Dinesh Prasad reportedly talked to authorities concerned in Union ministry of human resource development.
After an assurance from the ministry that a team of officials will visit the campus next week, he conveyed the message to the students on strike.
It was only after an assurance from the local administration that they would monitor the day-to-day affairs of the college that the protesting students called off the hunger strike.
Before the intervention of the sub-divisional officer, S.N. Sinha, the institute’s present director-in-charge, had tried to persuade the protesters to call off the strike. But the students refused to have a conversation with Sinha.
Sinha, who is looking after the affairs of the institute, after acting director Akhileswar Mishra went on leave, had tried to talk to the protesting students twice ever since the students resorted to fast-unto-death strike.
But on both the occasions the students refused to talk to the senior professor, as they believe he will not solve their problem.
The sub-divisional officer claimed to have a talk with the officials concerned in human resource department.
But the deputy commissioner of Seraikela-Kharswan district, Mohan Lal Rai, said neither his officials nor he had any talk with the ministry in New Delhi.
“We spoke to the acting director (Akhileswar Mishra) who is on leave and informed him about the issue,” said Rai.
The deputy commissioner said that once the acting director comes back, he would take up the issue with the ministry in appointing a full-fledged director.
About 350 students of first and second years had resorted to fast-unto-death on Thursday demanding immediate appointment of a full-fledged director, stepping up security on the college premises, uninterrupted supply of power and drinking water in the college as well as students’ hostels.
The condition of some of the students on hunger strike had turned critical this morning.

A prolonged battle between the acting director and teachers had affected the end-semester exams and now, a software glitch is holding back the results.
NITs across the country were scheduled to announce the results today and all of them except the Jamshedpur institution have declared the results. Here, however, a maiden attempt to tabulate results through a software created trouble.
“Non-compilation of marks through the software is causing a delay in declaration of results. We are following it up and expect to get the results in the next couple of days,” said Akhileswar Misra, the acting director of NIT, Jamshedpur.
He said marks have been collected and tabulation would begin shortly.
Mishra, who is the head of the MCA department, said the institute had tried to use a software to expedite tabulation. “I was striving to bring out the results according to schedule on May 23. But, unfortunately, the results could not be published on time,” said the acting director.
Sources in NIT Teachers’ Association (NITTA), who have been complaining about the director, said the failure to publish the results was due to the autocratic attitude of Mishra.
“Mishra knew that the tabulation would have to be done manually as the software company installing the system concerned was not through with their work. Despite repeated pleas that the software would not work at this stage, the acting director went ahead and tried to tabulate marks using the system,” said a key member of NITTA.
The teachers of the NIT have repeatedly complained that the autocratic attitude of Mishra was hampering functioning of the institution. NITTA had gone on strike for a long period demanding the appointment of a full-time director.
A teacher said after they had cancelled the strike on May 14, NITTA had raised the issue of the acting director’s decision to engage outside teachers for viva and evaluation. “But the acting director did not pay heed to the teachers’ protest and kept on depending on the software for tabulation,” said the teacher.
Sources said students would be in trouble because of the delay in announcement of results.
Almost all students who had appeared in the final year’s examination have been selected for jobs in national and multinational companies.
A sizeable number of students have to submit their certificates or marksheets to their employers by June 10 while others would have to complete the process between mid-June and July 1.
In case the results are not published by then, several budding engineers could be deprived of jobs, they added.
Shekhar Sinha, a final year student, said: “I have got a job in an automobile company and my joining date is June 8. NIT authorities must give me the necessary certificate before that otherwise I will be in a spot.”

M.K. Agrawal, the president of NITTA, said the authorities of the technical institute promoted all the six teachers who had appeared in the interview, which was held in the first week of May for promotion under Career Advancement Scheme, violating rules.
“Of the six teachers, four were promoted as professors. But of them, promotions of two — Ram Vinay Sharma and Shailendra Kumar — were anomalous,” said Agrawal, adding that in accordance with the rule of promotion, an assistant professor has to do a PhD and have eight years of teaching experience.
“Ram Vinay Sharma and Shailendra Kumar have completed their PhDs, but as far as their teaching experience is concerned, the eight years’ experience ends on July 1, 2008. So how did the acting director allow the teachers to join as professors from May 16?” asked Agrawal.
He said that when a majority of the college teachers had resorted to a strike for implementation of CAS, favouring a few teachers by overlooking the norms was a very serious error.
“We have intimated the secretary of ministry of human resources development, New Delhi and Union HRD minister about the irregularities,” he said, adding that they have sent a copy of the complaint to the chairman of NIT board of governors — B. Muthuraman.
NITTA functionaries also alleged that Mishra was signing backdated cheques in favour of the suppliers of laboratory equipment and software to the technical institute.
“The acting director is signing backdated cheques to facilitate the suppliers and contractors to get their dues,” Agrawal said, asking for a probe into the matter by the Central government.
Refusing to say much on either issue, Mishra told The Telegraph: “Let the teachers write to the chairman of board governors with whatever grievances they may have against me or the institute authorities. I do not want to make any comment on either matter at present.”
