NIT Jamshedpur To Be Run On The Lines Of IITs

Jamshedpur: : The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jamshed-pur will be run on the lines of the Indian Institute of Techno-logy (IITs) with professionals being inducted onto the board of directors to manage the affairs of the institute.
“We want NIT, Jamshedpur to be the first priority of students appearing at the joint entrance”, said NIT’s chairman B Muthuraman, who is also the Tata Steel managing director.
Among the major administrative decisions taken by the board was that four of the vacancies on the board would be filled up by professionals. The board has at present nine members. To be headed by Mr Debashish Bhattacharyya of IIT, Kharagpur, from July 1 this year. According to Mr Muthuraman, the board has approved the formation of a senate, which would have the responsibility of formulating the courses being offered by the institute.
Also, an expert committee was formed to look at some of the specialised programmes being run by the institute; other issues like formation of a building and works committee and appointment of a legal firm. “We are going to look at the manpower structure of the institute and study the security aspects of the institute,” said the chairman A budget of the institute is to be prepared and presented on July 14 at the next board meeting. Seventeen NITs, including the one in Jamshedpur, have so far shed their former Regional Institute of Technology (RIT) status, to become deemed universities, funded fully by the central government.
Under their current NIT status, the institutes have the power to change syllabus, conduct examinations, introduce new courses and run the administration professionally on the lines of the IITs.
Admissions to these institutes are taking place through the joint entrance examination conducted by the CBSE. The NIT in Jamshedpur has 280-odd seats for various engineering disciplines.
